Revealing the Hierarchical Microstructure of Innovative Additively Manufactured Metal Parts with Conventional Light Microscopy

چکیده
Abstract Additively manufactured parts are characterized by a peculiar microstructure, originated the distinctive layer-by-layer process. In case of additive technology based on localized melting metallic feedstock, as laser-based powder bed fusion (LPBF), resulting microstructure has hierarchical arrangement, consisting macro- and microscopical features affecting final properties. Commonly, several advanced metallographic techniques adopted in order to reveal LPBF microstructure. However, main microstructural can be also qualitatively appreciated means conventional light microscopy. The present work aims at describing how Co28Cr6Mo alloy characterized, along with its features, sole

Additively manufactured hierarchical stainless steels with high strength and ductility.
Many traditional approaches for strengthening steels typically come at the expense of useful ductility, a dilemma known as strength-ductility trade-off. New metallurgical processing might offer the possibility of overcoming this. Here we report that austenitic 316L stainless steels additively manufactured via a laser powder-bed-fusion technique exhibit a combination of yield strength and tensil...
متن کاملAreal Surface Texture Data Extraction from X-ray Computed Tomography Reconstructions of Metal Additively Manufactured Parts
Many applications that exploit the manufacturing flexibility of additive manufacturing (AM) produce surfaces, primarily internal features, which cannot be measured using conventional contact or line-ofsight optical methods. This paper evaluates the capability of a novel technique to extract areal surface data from micro-focus X-ray computed tomography (XCT) from AM components and then generate ...

Nowadays, strong, light-weight, multi-functional, high performing products are key for achieving success in the worldwide markets. Meeting those requirements calls for enabling technologies that lead to innovative and sustainable manufacturing [1]. A joint technique is one or a combination of the available mechanical, chemical, thermal processes to create a bond between materials with a number ...
متن کاملAnalysis of Porosity in Additively Manufactured Parts using 3D Metallographic Analysis Compared to Conventional 2D Stereology Estimates
Porosity is a typical defect in additively manufactured (AM) parts. Such defects limit the properties and performance of AM parts, and need to be characterized accurately. Current methods for characterization using microstructure rely on classical stereological methods that extrapolate information from two dimensional images. Newer three dimensional (3D) microstructural analysis techniques prov...

Additive manufacturing/3D printing of medical devices is becoming more commonplace, a 3D printed drug is now commercially available, and bioprinting is poised to transition from laboratory to market. Despite the variety of technologies enabling these products, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is charged with protecting and promoting the public health by ensuring these products are safe...
